Green light for regional lighting project

The Great South Coast region is set to embark upon its largest regional infrastructure project yet, having been awarded more than $1.4 million for a regional street lighting project.

The Great South Coast Street Smart Lighting Program will see some 7500 street lights replaced with environmentally-friendly globes in a number of key residential streets.

Great South Coast Chairman Matt Makin said the switch would save 294 tonnes of greenhouse emissions each year, with savings of around $9.8 million for Councils over 20 years.

Funded under the Federal Government’s Community Energy Efficiency Program, the project impacts the Shires of Colac Otway, Corangamite, Moyne, Southern Grampians and Glenelg and the City of Warrnambool.

Cr Makin said that once installed, the energy efficient lighting would result in savings of up to $170,000 per annum for councils.

“The new globes will reduce energy usage by up to 68 per cent which will have a significant impact on energy bills for each Council into the future.”

Cr Makin said that aside from reduced greenhouse gas emissions, the new street lights would also improve public safety.

“These lights will put out a more uniform light with less glare, which means night time visibility will be a lot better.”

The Great South Coast Street Smart Lighting Program is expected to be rolled out over three to five years under the direction of a specially appointed Project Officer.
